Thanks. Good question. We felt it was simply the best word to describe these couragous individuals who are alerting the world. Some have used the word dissidents but we felt that had a negative connotation, while Canary is positive.

Canaries were used in coal mines. If the canary died, the miners knew the air was poisonous and they should get out of the mine.
Yes but these Canaries are alive and are “alerting" the world.
